Iran has issued a sharp warning to the US after an American submarine sank the Iranian naval frigate IRIS Dena. Iranian officials said Washington would “bitterly regret” the attack. The Tehran described it as an atrocity at sea.

On Thursday Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that “The U.S. has perpetrated an atrocity at sea, 2,000 miles away from Iran's shores,” He also added “Mark my words: The U.S. will come to bitterly regret [the] precedent it has set.”

Araghch said the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena was “a guest of India's navy”. More than 120 sailors were “struck in international waters without warning.” IRIS stands for Islamic Republic of Iran Ship and it works as an identifier of Iranian naval vessels.

The warship had taken part in a naval work out in the Bay of Bengal. Sri Lankan officials shared Iran naval ship attack that more than 80 Iranian sailors died and about 30 got injured. The rest remain unaccounted for. Both rescue and search are ongoing on regular basis.

Sri Lanka’s Minister of Health Nalinda Jayatissa reportedly shares in the parliament that another Iranian vessel is sailing close up to Sri Lanka’s territorial waters. He said “We are making necessary interventions to resolve this issue, restrict the threat to lives and to ensure regional security”.

The torpedo incident has been heralded as demonstrate of U.S. military might by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

He told reporters at the Pentagon on Wednesday “An American submarine sank an Iranian warship that thought it was secure in international waters”.

Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine also added on the operation as “an incredible demonstration of America’s global reach”. It is also noted that this is for the first time an American torpedo has sunk a ship since World War II.
